Bash Exit Codes and Linux Error Codes (Full Reference)

Every command in bash returns an exit code when it finishes: a number from 0 to 255 that tells you whether it succeeded or failed, and often why. A value of 0 means success. Anything else signals some kind of failure. This page is the complete reference to bash exit codes and the related Linux error codes, with the meaning of each and how to read them in your own scripts.
How to check the exit code
Bash stores the exit status of the most recent command in the special variable $?. Read it right after the command runs:
ls /nonexistent
echo $? # prints 2
Any non-zero value means the command did not succeed. You use this in scripts to branch on success or failure:
if some_command; then
echo "it worked"
else
echo "it failed with code $?"
fi
You set your own script’s exit code with the exit command, for example exit 1 to signal failure.
