Curious file system permission

I am trying to backup certain files used by Hyperion Essbase. These files appear to be locked even though the application is not running. I know in a Windows environment they get locked but they also are unlocked when the app is not running.) When I list the files I see interesting entries along the lines of:

-rw-r-lr--

for these files. I am at a loss to determine the l unless it actually stands for lock. How do I remove this lock? Can I simply chmod or will this cause issues?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
