SNMP
Simple Network Management
Protocol is an application layer protocol that facilitates
the exchange of management information between network devices such as routers ,access
servers, switches and bridges, hubs, computer hosts, or printers..
SNMP consists of three key components:
1. Managed devices,
Managed device is a network node that contains an SNMP agent . Managed
devices collect and store management information and make this information available to
Network Managment System using SNMP.
2. Agents,
Agent is a software module on the managed device which collects & stores
information about NMSs in Management Information Base (MIB) which is available using SNMP
by Network-management systems. An agent has local knowledge of management information and
it converts this information into a SNMP compatible form .
3. Network Management Systems
(NMS).
An NMS executes applications & provides processing and memory resources required
for network management
How it works ?
SNMP works by sending messages to different parts of a network. SNMP-compliant
devices store data about themselves in Management Information Bases (MIBs) and return this
data to the SNMP requesters.
MIB , short for Management Information Base, is a database of objects that can be
monitored by a network management system.
